In a surprising move, Microsoft has just launched a new website and a mobile application for all Android smartphones, that lets users control and program their device remotely. The service, called on{X}, is currently in BETA mode. However, it gives users a peek into the future and the innovative ways in which our smartphones will be aware of their time, action and location features.

Eran Yariv, an engineering manager at Microsoft’s R&D Center in Israel, introduced the service. For instance, wouldn’t it be incredibly convenient if you could program your smartphone to automatically send a reply message with your current location while you are driving, to your wife’s “where” message? You could even program your phone to automatically display the day’s agenda the moment you walk into your workplace.  Or even the day’s weather when you wake up in morning. Sounds incredible? Believe it.

The unique apps runs in the background and utilises the sensors on your smartphone to automate your everyday actions, like displaying your horoscope for the day in the morning, or sending a text to your partner when you leave from work.

Once you install the app on your phone, go to the on{X} website and write or adapt small JavaScript codes that will instruct your phone to undertake certain actions and reactions to daily events.

For the moment, the on{X} service will mostly be used by developers and other tech enthusiasts who have atleast basic coding knowledge. However, if you’re enthusiastic about this service, you can refer to a growing pile of “pre-canned recipes” (codes) that will let you trigger events when the sensors on the phone detect that you just changed your mode of transport from walking to driving, or if you just left home.

If you do not have an Android smartphone, don’t worry. According to Eran Yariv, the on{X} service will soon be available on other platforms like iOS and Windows Phone too.
