Google is planning to unveil a smaller and cheaper Android tablet to counter the Apple’s iPad, earlier in May. Google is making the tablet in partnership with electronic giant Asus.

According to the speculations from a leak report on Digitimes, the tablet could sell for as low as 130 pounds and will sport a 7-inch screen. The tablet is also seen as a threat to the Amazon’s Kindle fire, and like the kindle it will also be selling the contents from Google’s own online store.

The Google also has recently renamed its market place as Google Play, thus streamlining its services such as video store, app store and eBook. So the timing really makes some sense. Leaks from the Far East too, hinted that a cheap entertainment tablet may be released in the first half of the year.

In an interview with an Italian newspaper, executive chairman of Google, Eric Schmidt stated that in six month they are planning to launch a tablet of the highest quality. Apple is also believed to be working on a smaller iPad mini, which might be released in the third quarter of this year.
