Steve Jobs own use of the term ‘App Store’ could mean Apple’s trademark demise

Let me get you caught up on another lawsuit that is taking place between Apple and some company, this time Amazon. We all know that Amazon recently launched their own app store, termed the Appstore. Apple, and Steve Jobs in particular, have a big problem with that name. You see, Apple has decided to trademark ‘App Store’, saying that people hear app store and think iPhone. Some people would say that were too general a term to trademark, but Apple doesn’t think so. Amazon was quick to quote Steve Jobs once to show just how easy it is to use app store and not mean the Apple App Store though:

“So there will be at least four app stores on Android, which customers must search among to find the app they want and developers will need to work with to distribute their apps and get paid. This is going to be a mess for both users and developers. Contrast this with Apple’s integrated App Store, which offers users the easiest-to-use largest app store in the world, preloaded on every iPhone.”

We put the big thing to look for in bold. It seems even Apple’s CEO uses their trademarked term to describe other app stores. While this probably isn’t Amazon’s only defense, it does make a strong statement. This lawsuit is definitely just getting started, so we’ll have more for all of you as it happens. Do you think ‘App Store’ should be trademarked? Let us know below.
